BOGOR – Muzammil Ihsan has officially been elected as the National Coordinator (Korpus) of the Student Executive Boards of Indonesia (BEM SI) for the 2025–2026 term. The President of BEM Universitas Sumatera Utara (USU) was elected through the 18th National Congress Forum (Munas) of BEM SI, held at the Bogor Agricultural Institute (IPB), West Java, from June 24 to 29, 2025.
The 18th Munas was officially opened by IPB Rector Arif Satria, Vice-Rector for Student Affairs and Cooperation Deni Noviana, and the IPB Directorate of Student Affairs. The event was also attended by the Minister of Higher Education, Science, and Technology Brian Yuliarto, Minister of Agriculture Amran Sulaiman, and the Secretary-General of the Ministry of Agriculture Ali Jamil, who provided strategic insights on the role of students in development and democracy.
The forum, which gathered more than 200 campus representatives from across Indonesia, served as an important venue for determining the future direction of the national student movement. It was filled with critical discussions and idealistic ideas that became the driving spirit for the newly elected leadership.
Muzammil emphasized that optimism must be the foundation for building a more grounded and focused student movement.
“This is not merely a personal or institutional victory, but a triumph of ideas — that students must continue to be the locomotive of national transformation,” he stated during his inaugural speech as the newly elected coordinator.
As Central Coordinator, Muzammil will lead nine Strategic Issue Coordinators and seven Regional Coordinators, along with all BEMs under the BEM SI alliance. The election process adhered to the official Standard Operating Procedures (SOP) through a structured Munas forum mechanism.
His leadership will initially focus on key issues highlighted during the forum, including the situation in Papua, environmental justice, and strengthening the position of students as critical partners of the state.
With this new leadership, BEM SI is expected to shape a more solid, inclusive, and responsive student movement that reflects Indonesia’s socio-political dynamics. One of the core themes for this term is “Optimizing the Student Movement in Post-Democracy Reconciliation,” a significant idea born from the long dialectical discussions of the 18th Munas, which will serve as a milestone for the student movement’s future endeavors.
