About Student Executive Board Universitas Sumatera Utara

The Student Executive Board of Universitas Sumatera Utara (BEM USU) is the highest student executive organization at the university level, serving as a platform for aspirations, collaboration, and student-driven initiatives. Established in 2023 through the transformation of the Student Government (PEMA USU), BEM USU carries the vision of “Collaborative Reform for the Advancement of USU Students and Society.” The organization is committed to realizing transparent, synergistic, and impactful governance that benefits the entire academic community.

Chairman of Student Executive Board USU

Muzammil Ihsan is a student at the Faculty of Agriculture, Universitas Sumatera Utara, majoring in Animal Husbandry. Since junior high school, Muzammil has been actively involved in various organizations and continues to develop himself to become a person of value and contribution to others. He is currently involved in several activities and organizations, including Tembung Kreatif, GEKRAFS Deli Serdang, UKM BKM Al Mukhlisin, and the Start-Up Smart Generation Community of USU. He has also served as Chief Financial Officer in the Teaching in the Village program, and has been actively engaged in both the Faculty and University Student Executive Boards, where he now serves as the President of BEM USU for the 2024 term.

In terms of academics and achievements, Muzammil has received several honors, including Best Graduate of High School, Second Place Winner in the Feed Supplement Innovation Competition organized by the Faculty of Animal Husbandry, Udayana University (2023), and First Place Winner in the Debate Competition at the ISMAPETI Regional Working Meeting (2024). He possesses excellent skills in teamwork, communication, time management, and empathy. Beyond his academic and organizational pursuits, Muzammil also demonstrates entrepreneurial spirit through his business venture, Santhrift Store. With strong leadership and dedication, he remains committed to making positive contributions to the academic environment and society at large.

Organisation Structure

History

1952–1957

Universitas Sumatera Utara (USU) was founded on June 4, 1952, and officially became a state university on November 20, 1957. The early forms of student organizations at USU began to emerge alongside the development of the university’s structure.

1990an

During the New Order era, the government implemented the Campus Life Normalization Policy (NKK), resulting in the dissolution of the Student Council (Dewan Mahasiswa / Dema) in all Indonesian universities. Subsequently, student organizational structures were reformed into the University Student Senate (SMPT), Faculty Student Senate (SMF), and University Student Senate (SMU).

2000

Amidst the reform of campus organizations, the University Student Senate (SMU) was transformed into the Student Government (PEMA USU). PEMA USU was established as the highest executive institution at the university level, responsible for carrying out student activities and channeling student aspirations under the auspices of USU.

2023

In September 2023, the USU Student Congress officially decided to change the name and organizational structure from PEMA USU to BEM USU (Student Executive Board of Universitas Sumatera Utara). This transformation, approved through the student congress, marked a significant milestone in strengthening the governance and role of student organizations within Universitas Sumatera Utara.
